Portugal Golf Holidays

Portugal and golf holidays go together like Rory and McIlroy. They’re made for each other. Hundreds of miles of Atlantic coast – from the usually gentle shores of the Algarve to the sometimes towering waves between Cascais and Porto. Plus a year-round climate nigh perfect for golf. Plus a variety of great courses. Plus people who, in the main, really care about their golfing guests from abroad. That’s a lot of plusses – and that’s why each year more than 250,000 golfers (the majority from the UK and Ireland) choose to holiday in Portugal.

Let’s offer a few thoughts on golf breaks to suit all tastes and abilities . . .

The most popular destination for golfers from the UK and Ireland is in the central part of the Algarve with a cluster of world-class courses: Vilamoura’s seven Oceanico courses, Vila Sol, Pinheiros Altos, Vale de Lobo’s two courses (Ocean and Royal), Quinta do Lago’s four nine-hole courses and San Lourenco . . . Is there anywhere else in Europe, maybe in the world, with such quantity and quality within 12 kilometres?
The accommodation is worthy of the golf – from the grand five-star Dona Filipa at Vale de Lobo and Quinta do Lago Hotel and the large apartments at Formosa Park to more modest hotels and self-catering villas and apartments.

We also have a soft spot for the eastern Algarve, not far from the Spanish border. Quinta de Cima (joint best in Portugal according to one survey) and Quinta da Ria (joint fourth) sit side by side just off the main road from Tavira to Spain and just a few kilometres away is Monte Rei (joint No 1), a magnificent top-dollar course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Tavira has a selection of good hotels, as well as the on-site hotels at the courses.

On the coast to the west of Lisbon are the towns of Cascais and Estoril and a clutch of fine courses, including Oitavos, Quinta da Marinha, Penha Longa and Belas, with hotels worthy of one of the more glamorous resorts in Europe and one of its more interesting capitals. If your golf holiday is for more than a few days, take the bridge across the mouth of the River Tejo and try Aroeira (two courses), Quinta do Peru and Troia.

Portugal – great golf, great value, great after-golf things to see and do, two hours from the UK and Ireland!

Dear Team,

We are just back from our trip to Quinta da Marinha and the Onyria.

Thank you for recommending and organising this excellent holiday. The place was ideal for us - we enjoyed the hotel and its facilities, visited Lisbon, Cascais, and Sintra, and I found the golf courses to be just what I hoped. The staff at the hotel and golf course were all most friendly and helpful.

We asked you to find a holiday for us with several criteria, and you came up with something that met every one.

With regards

Mr Bull
